The Kumaon: Almora’s private mountain retreat

No items found.

Uttarakhand is divided into two primary regions: Garhwal to the northwest and Kumaon to the southeast. In the heart of Kumaon lies Almora, a city steeped in history, founded by King Kalyan Chand in 1568. For centuries, it has drawn artists, scholars, pilgrims, and seekers alike. Perched on a ridge with the sacred Nanda Devi Range towering above is *The Kumaon*, a private mountain retreat that blends rustic charm with understated elegance.

The Kumaon feels like a hidden sanctuary. Its 10 luxurious suites are nestled in pairs across five structures, each with private terraces that open up to sweeping views of the Himalayas. The architecture is an ode to the local landscape. The lower suites, built from locally-quarried stone, mimic the traditional homes of the Kumaoni villages, while the upper suites, with their bay windows and fly-ash brick construction, exude a more contemporary vibe, blending bamboo and copper accents. Whether you're on the terrace or lounging by the fireplace inside, the panoramic views and the peace of the hills surround you.

Meals here are a true reflection of the land. The cantilevered dining area, suspended over the valley, serves a thoughtful mix of Kumaoni and international cuisine. Each dish celebrates the region’s produce—locally grown, foraged, and seasonally selected. One of the highlights is the Kumaoni thali, which features black soybean daal, bhaang chutney made from cannabis seeds, and freshly made millet flatbreads. The dining experience is elevated by the breathtaking views of Nanda Devi, framed perfectly through the floor-to-ceiling glass walls. Curated dining experiences on the terrace and in the library add a special warmth to your stay.

The retreat offers more than just a tranquil stay. The in-house naturalist guides tailored excursions, from walks through local hamlets to hikes through oak and rhododendron forests that lead to ancient shrines. A short trek takes you to Chitai Temple, dedicated to Golu Devi, where thousands of bells hang as tokens of gratitude for wishes fulfilled. For wildlife enthusiasts, a visit to Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary is a must. A hike up to Zero Point reveals 360-degree views of the Himalayan peaks stretching from Himachal in the northwest to Nepal in the east.

After a day spent exploring, the spa at The Kumaon is the perfect place to unwind. Tucked beneath the main building, it overlooks the valley blooming with purple sage. A rejuvenating massage with locally-sourced apricot or hemp oils eases away the fatigue from trekking the hillsides.
