Nakshatra Mana - A hidden gem by the backwaters of Poothotta, Kerala

For those who appreciate design and aesthetics, Nakshatra Mana in Poothotta, Kerala, is a hidden gem that promises a perfect home away from home. Located just a two-hour drive from Cochin airport, this exquisite 4-bedroom residence effortlessly blends indoor and outdoor living, making it a sanctuary for those seeking tranquility and beauty.

If you're a fan of the classic film *Mr. India*, you might recall Anil Kapoor’s memorable pitch: "kamre ke aage balcony, balcony ke aage garden, garden ke aage samundar" (a room with a balcony, a balcony with a garden, a garden with the sea). Nakshatra Mana embodies this concept, featuring a central courtyard that leads to a living area opening onto a verandah with views of a serene pond and the river beyond. The ground level houses three bedrooms, the dining area, kitchen, outdoor dining space, a natural swimming pool, and a spa. A discreet staircase ascends to the fourth bedroom, offering an additional layer of privacy.

Built by Sneha Iype and Prakash Varma of Nirvana Films as a serene retreat from their bustling Bangalore life, Nakshatra Mana is managed by the luxury villa group Lux Unlock. Previously owned by Ashok Koshy, a celebrated photographer and flautist whose work celebrates India's artistic heritage, the home was designed by Rajesh George of Paushtika Architectural Design Consultancy. George’s expertise in local architecture and horticulture is evident in the home’s charming blend of old-world aesthetics and modern amenities.

Each room at Nakshatra Mana opens to the outdoors, inviting nature inside. The house features traditional touches like old-world latches and curios sourced from Mumbai artisans, while art pieces by local artists such as Sara Hussain and Richa Kashelkar enrich the space with a true sense of Kerala’s cultural essence. The master bedroom is adorned with a striking collection of bleeding hearts arranged in a large heart shape, and the verandah lights are uniquely diffused by a frog installation.

During my stay, I spent countless hours on the verandah by the pond, immersing myself in the tranquil sounds of nature and enjoying books from the Nakshatra Mana collection. A refreshing glass of toddy or a comforting cup of tea, paired with mini beef samosas, was perfect while lounging in the natural swimming pool.

The culinary offerings are a highlight, with a menu that includes local, home-cooked delights. From squid chili and prawn curry to beef fry with coin parottas, sambhar variations, crisp poppadoms, and chicken 65, every dish is a flavorful testament to Kerala’s rich culinary tradition.  Chocolate samosas and banana fritters brought back fond childhood memories. The breakfast spread was particularly memorable, featuring kadala curry with puttu (steamed rice and coconut), steamed bananas and fluffy idlis with a variety of chutneys.

Nakshatra Mana is an ideal destination for a family vacation or a getaway with friends, offering a unique blend of serene beauty, cultural richness, and modern comfort.

This 4-room house is priced at Rs 50,000 per night including breakfast. (Rates may differ based on season).
