Just a two-hour drive south from Colombo airport brings you to Ahangama, a serene beach town nestled along the Laccadive Sea. While it's known as a surfer's paradise, even if you're not one to ride the waves, Ahangama offers plenty to enjoy with its golden sands, warm sun, and tranquil waters. Though still maintaining its quiet charm, the town is steadily drawing more international visitors seeking a peaceful retreat by the sea.
Ahangama’s seaside is dotted with charming accommodations, many reflecting the influence of Dutch colonial architecture. Among them is Abode Ahangama, where I stayed for two nights. This intimate 4-bedroom boutique hotel features expansive lawns, a serene swimming pool, and cozy nooks perfect for unwinding. Just a five-minute stroll from the beach, it’s the latest venture by Abed Sham, the visionary behind Abode Bombay, seamlessly blending relaxed luxury with a homely touch.
The heart of Abode Ahangama is its inviting living area, anchored by a long, solid wood table where guests gather for meals. The space is a blend of clean white lines, chipped terrazzo floors, and curated furniture, with art pieces sourced from around the world adding a touch of global flair. Pops of color brighten the soft furnishings, while each bedroom features an ensuite open-air bathroom for a tranquil, nature-inspired experience. Meals are freshly prepared in-house, with breakfast offerings like egg hoppers with bacon, smoothie bowls, and refreshing King Coconuts, followed by simple yet flavorful Sri Lankan curry and rice for dinner.
Just down the road from Abode Ahangama is its sister property, Abode by the Beach, offering two spacious suites perched above a vibrant bar and restaurant that opens directly to the shoreline. The open-plan rooms are thoughtfully designed with televisions, his-and-her wash basins, and bathtubs, blending comfort with laid-back luxury. I stayed in the Beach Suite, which overlooks Sion Surf Point Cove and comes with organic toiletries, a loofah, and eco-friendly toothbrushes. Essentials like an iron, full-sized hair dryers, and umbrellas are available on request, but the true standout is the adventurous balcony bathtub.
Chef Jason Hudanish has crafted a menu brimming with fresh ingredients, featuring taraditos, poke bowls, and inventive cocktails like the wasabi and burnt lemon sake or the clarified whiskey piña colada. Their aim is to elevate Sri Lanka’s cocktail scene, serving food and drinks inspired by the ocean, local ingredients, and the seasons.
