A Tranquil Escape to Sitla Estate: A Journey into the Kumaon Himalayas

The Kumaon region has been a popular getaway for residents from Delhi seeking the solace of mountain air. A 3.5 hour drive from Pantnagar Airport, I made my way to Sitla Estate, nestled high in the Kumaon Himalayas. One of the oldest properties in Uttarakhand, I’d heard plenty about it from fellow travellers and have been trying to make my way there for almost a decade. Sitla is an oasis where time seems to slow down, and the natural world wraps you in its quiet embrace.

The Himalayas

Every morning, I woke up to an awe-inspiring 200° panoramic view of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks and undulating valleys. The crisp mountain air, infused with the scent of pine and fresh earth engulfs you. It was as if the mountains themselves were welcoming me to Sitla Estate, located by a reserve forest sanctuary where tranquility reigns supreme. Sitla Estate isn’t just about the views—it’s about experiencing nature in its purest form. The estate invites you to unplug and reconnect. Whether I was wandering through the farm, sitting quietly under the plum tree, exploring the winding jungle trails, or enjoying the warmth of the cozy fireplace with a book - every corner of the estate was an invitation to immerse myself fully in the natural world. I even caught sight of a few birds along the way, adding to the sense of wonder that the estate brings.

I checked into their deluxe orchard suite with an anteroom and private balcony. The moment I stepped onto the balcony, I was taken aback by the grandeur of the Himalayas framed by lush greenery, dotted with apple orchards and vegetable fields, as though I had stepped into a painting. The newly renovated suites are designed to enhance this connection with nature. Each suite is a sanctuary of comfort, thoughtfully restored by renowned designer Adil Ahmad. The heritage furniture, patterned carpets, and textured walls create an atmosphere of timeless elegance, while large windows offer uninterrupted views of the lush surroundings. It’s a space where the beauty of nature meets understated luxury, creating an intimate dialogue between you and the environment.

One of the highlights of my stay was the food. Sitla Estate is a culinary haven, offering homely yet gourmet meals. Every meal is a celebration of freshness and quality, thanks to the estate’s farm-to-table philosophy where the produce makes its way to your table, 3 hours from the time it has been harvested. The fruits, vegetables, and herbs are sourced directly from the estate's orchards and fields, making each dish not just delicious but also incredibly nutritious.

Breakfast on the patio under the plum tree was a simple yet delightful affair. The cool morning breeze, combined with the sound of birdsong and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, made it feel like a moment of pure bliss. Lunch in the orchard, surrounded by the fragrance of apples and apricots, was a melange of local pahadi dishes. And then, there was the formal 4-course dinner, meticulously curated by the estate's owner, Vikram Maira, who is as passionate about food as he is about the estate itself.

The beauty of Sitla Estate lies not just in its physical surroundings but also in its ability to allow you to slow down and reconnect with yourself. After a hearty meal, I spent my afternoons exploring the estate’s many hiking trails, each offering a new adventure. The jungle trails, in particular, were a treat for those who enjoy a little bit of mystery and excitement. The rich flora and fauna kept me company, while the stillness of the forest enveloped me in its calm.

After a day filled with nature, adventure, and delicious meals, I found myself retreating to the estate’s lounge, a cozy sanctuary perfect for unwinding. The inviting deep sofas, the roaring fire crackling in the hearth, and the company of fellow guests created a sense of warmth and camaraderie. It’s a place to share stories, sip on a drink, and reflect on the day’s experiences.

Down the road is Kilmora Handicrafts - a shop selling local products and souvenirs made by artisans and farmers of the Kumaun Grameen Udyog.
