There's a special place for places that always have cake on the table.

Tucked away amidst the whispering woods, where the melodies of nature harmonize with the breathtaking vistas of the Simla hills, lies Southgate Kasauli—a haven for those seeking solace and luxury in the embrace of the lower Himalayas. As I ventured into this sanctuary, I found myself enraptured by the sheer magnificence of the view and the unparalleled hospitality it offered. This luxury home, discreetly nestled close to the main road yet ensconced in the embrace of the pinegrove trees, exudes an aura of tranquility and exclusivity. With four spacious double rooms, two expansive living rooms and balconies, Southgate Kasauli ensures that every guest is cocooned in comfort and serenity.

Southgate Kasauli is a haven for birdwatchers, where the melodies of feathered friends provide a symphony of nature's finest tunes. We were staying on the second floor of the house which gives you access to a plush living area with a fireplace, dining and a sit out. The heart of Southgate Kasauli lies in its culinary offerings, where every meal is a celebration of flavors and traditions. Led by the passionate owner, Gautam Dhawan—a true Punjabi at heart—the kitchen staff has been trained under his tutelage to create local dishes as well as a gourmet Continental menu.

Built by Dhawan's parents as a tribute to their ancestral home in Shimla, the villa exudes a sense of nostalgia and warmth that is palpable in every corner. Dhawan's eclectic design sensibilities, infused with elements from his own home decor brand, Exhibit D, lend a unique character to each room, reflecting not just his creativity but also his deeply personal connection to the space. Winter is the best time to visit Southgate. The old-school fireplace surrounded by Christmas decorations that Gautam has collected and curated over the years from his travels convert the whole place into a charming celebration of the holiday season. The highlight of my stay were Gautam’s two beagles who snuggled up with me on the couch while I devoured warm cake and custard prepared specially by Gautam.

Christmas time at Southgate

In this luxurious home amidst the hills, I found not just a temporary escape from the chaos of the world, but a sanctuary where nature's beauty and human hospitality converge to create moments of pure bliss. And for that, I will always cherish my time at Southgate Kasauli—a true gem nestled in the heart of the Himalayas.
